Every year in May, visitors to the State Capitol Grounds can enjoy a weekend experiencing West Virginian and Appalachian culture and heritage during the Vandalia Gathering. The Gathering is a celebration of the state’s traditional arts, music, dance, stories, crafts and regional food. The free festival combines a relaxed family atmosphere with the unique ethnic and cultural heritage of West Virginia. The weekend is filled with concerts and contests which include the popular Liars Contest and musical competitions in flat pick guitar, mandolin and blue-grass banjo. West Virginia craftspeople also display and sell their creations, such as wind chimes, pottery, wall hangings, stained, fused and pressed glass, musical instruments and jewelry. The Vandalia Gathering is a great opportunity for visiting families to explore the State Capitol Grounds, the State Museum and get a true feeling for the rich culture and traditions of West Virginia.
Just a short 15-minute drive from the State Capitol and Vandalia Gathering, the Hampton Inn is a perfect place for your family to stay while visiting the city. Wind down in our recently renovated pool after you and your family has spent the day discovering the Capitol and experiencing the festival. Both the East End (where the State Capitol is located) and the area surrounding the Hampton Inn offer a great variety of restaurants, from locally owned eateries to nationally recognized chains. We hope you choose to make a weekend getaway out of the Vandalia Gathering in Charleston!
